About

Purabi Ghosh was born in 1940 in Dinajpur. The youngest of 9 children, she lost her mother when she was only a year old. She grew up surrounded by her elder siblings who raised her into adulthood. She pursued her university studies in Kolkata, attaining a Master's degree in Urban Planning. In 1965, she married Sakti Nandi, a civil engineer, and moved with him soon after to London, where she worked as an urban planner. The couple moved to New York in 1970, where they had two children. Always a person of diverse interests, she picked up computer programming in the 1980's and worked for many years in that capacity for a number of companies in the New York area. As she progressed through her life, she found her true callings. Throughout her life she was intensely connected to the written word, enjoying literature of different languages and forms, as well as writing stories and essays. In the late 1980's, driven by this passion, she started a Bengali-English literary magazine, producing a new issue each month, helping to finance it with her own money, writing many pieces, and editing the magazine largely on her own. The magazine was called Sangbadik and it reached and touched thousands of people in the US Bengali community. Purabi was also deeply moved to help her fellow human being. She engaged in many philanthropic activities, supporting organizations helping people both in the US and her native India. She was particularly attached to women's causes, donating significantly to support women's education, empowerment, and liberation. Having lived through a time in which her own life was enriched by the advancement of women, she felt compelled to support those women who were struggling and needed opportunities. Purabi died tragically in 2009 after being hit by a car while walking in the town where she lived outside of New York. She is deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, friends, relatives, and the many people whose lives she touched.
